What the Fear & Greed Index Means
When investors are fearful, prices often fall below what long-term holders consider fair value; when they are greedy, markets can overheat. The index compresses that mood into one number: 0–24 Extreme Fear, 25–44 Fear, 45–55 Neutral, 56–74 Greed, 75–100 Extreme Greed. Many traders use extreme readings as a contrarian signal — fearful markets have historically offered better entry points than euphoric ones — but the index is a sentiment gauge, not a prediction, and it must never be your only input.
The score combines five ingredients: market volatility (drawdowns raise fear), trading momentum and volume, social-media sentiment, survey results, and Bitcoin dominance (a rising dominance usually means investors are fleeing altcoins for safety, which signals fear).
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the current Fear & Greed index?
The index currently reads 26 — Fear. It is updated daily by Alternative.me and refreshed on this page every 30 minutes.
Is a low Fear & Greed score a buy signal?
Not by itself. Extreme fear has often coincided with market bottoms, but prices can keep falling. Treat the index as one sentiment input alongside your own research, never as financial advice.
How is the Fear & Greed index calculated?
It blends volatility, market momentum/volume, social sentiment, surveys and Bitcoin dominance into a single 0–100 score, where 0 is extreme fear and 100 is extreme greed.
How often does the index change?
The underlying index is calculated once per day. Short-term prices can move much faster than the index, so check live coin prices on the converter as well.
